Born in Italy, Andretti’s family immigrated to the United States when he was 15, and while his love for racing originated in Europe, it was in America where it prospered. Andretti’s racing career is amongst the most diverse in motorsports.
Over his career, Andretti won 109 total races and is the only one to have won a Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500, and a Formula One Championship. He is also only a handful of drivers to have won a race on a road course, dirt track, and a paved oval in a single season.
Andretti was so highly regarded that he was named the “Driver of the Century” by the Associated Press. Is there any higher praise than that?
We are proud to nominate Mario Andretti for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
