Initially a pairs skater, Kristi Yamaguchi elected to focus on a singles career, which proved to be the correct decision.

Yamaguchi quickly rose up the ranks, winning Silver at the 1991 U.S. Nationals but would win the Worlds that year. She continued her upward momentum, winning Olympic Gold in Albertville and retaining her World Title a month later. Yamaguchi’s blend of athleticism and artistry was among the best the sport has ever seen.
