Unlike Fleming, Hamill did not go into the Olympics with a World Championship in her trophy case. She won the Silver in both the 1974 and 1975 Worlds. But in Innsbruck, she became not just America's "girl next door" but the world. With her "Hamill Camel", a camel spin into a sit spin, that was all the more dramatic with her bob hair spinning in the wind. Hamill won that event and the 1976 World Championships.
Many athletes have inspired young children to want to take up their sport. Perhaps no other American woman motivated more girls to want to be a figure skater than Dorothy Hamill, and if they didn’t do that, they copied her haircut!

Peggy Fleming was the elegant swan, and Dorothy Hamill was the "girl next door." This is a compliment to them both as you could not take your eyes off of them, but for different reasons.
