  • “Aint the beer cold!”

If you were a fan of the Baltimore Orioles and/or Baltimore Colts and you heard Chuck Thompson utter that statement, it was a good day for your fandom.

Before he became an icon in Maryland, Thompson called games for both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Athletics, but that ended in 1949when he was hired as the voice of the Baltimore Colts (AAFC) and the Orioles of the International League. When the St. Louis Browns relocated to Baltimore in 1954, he became part of that broadcast, which, save for a time from 1988 to 1990, he remained part of until 2000.

Thompson's soothing delivery also graced the gridiron as he was the voice of the Colts from 1949 until their relocation to Indianapolis in 1983. He was present for the first sudden-death 1958 NFL Championship for NBC and also called the 1960 World Series, including the famed Bill Mazeroski home run.

We are proud to nominate Chuck Thompson for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
