From Southern California, Jim Rome exploded onto the sports talk show scene in 1990 on Sports 690 in San Diego. Four years later, he was in Los Angeles, and by the decade’s end, he was the host of the most successful sports talk show in the country.
With a rapid-fire delivery and penchant for hot takes, Rome is not as much a host as he is a ringleader for his fans. Rome calls the show the “Jungle”, his fans “the clones,” and encourages smack talk. It might be the most interactive sports talk show in history, and Rome, who is still doing it at a high level, has seen dozens of imitators come and go.
Embracing controversy (ask Jim Everett), Rome is fearless in who he might offend, regardless of their level of power David Stern). While he has appeared in movies, his best role was the one he wasn’t in: in “Any Given Sunday,” the brash sports reporter “Jack Rose” was based on him.
We are proud to nominate Jim Rome for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
