A three-time Pro Bowl Selection for the Dallas Cowboys, Don Meredith was meant to be an athlete, an entertainer, and a broadcaster in life. He blessed us with all three.
Following his playing days, Meredith went right into the booth, joining Howard Cosell and, a year later, his good friend, Frank Gifford, for Monday Night Football. It was a magical trio, with Meredith as the comic foil, with folksy charm. When the game looked to be over, fans knew it was official when Meredith sang “Turn out the lights, the party’s over”. His irreverence made him one of the most relatable sports broadcasters of his day, and if there was an informal poll in the 1970s of who a sports fan would like to hang out with at a bar, Meredith would have likely topped it.
Meredith was so beloved that he carved out a successful acting career and was the spokesperson for multiple products.
We are proud to nominate Don Meredith for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
