    • Larry Merchant was a print sports journalist for a decade before he was courted by HBO in 1978. He would stay with them until 2012, though he would still make appearances into his 90s.

      What distinguished Merchant from his peers was his fearless approach and penchant for calling it the way he saw it. This ruffled many feathers; while fans liked Merchant’s no-nonsense approach, boxers were not afraid to confront him, and he was not afraid to give it back (ask Floyd Mayweather Jr.).

      Blunt and uncompromising, Merchant is considered by many to be the best ever in pugilistic broadcasting.
