  • “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports…the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat”.

This was the famed phrase that all sports fans of a certain age all know those words and cadence of Jim McKay, who opened ABC’s Wide World of Sports every Saturday.

Known for his storytelling ability, McKay was the constant for Saturday, but was also the longtime voice for 12 Olympic Games, including the tragic 1972 Munich Games, where 11 Israeli athletes were slain by the Palestinian group, Black September. It was McKay who delivered the news. His somber professionalism and humane nature made him the conscience for many in the world of sports casting.

McKay also covered soccer, horse racing, auto racing, and golf for the company.

We are proud to nominate Jim McKay for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
