Sports broadcasters are not supposed to become the stars of the show, but in John Madden's case, it could not be helped.
With a larger-than-life personality as a coach who led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl win, Madden moved to the booth, where he became one of the most influential and transformative color analysts in all of sports. Beloved by fans and media alike, Madden worked for all four networks (CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC), and his 21-year pairing with Pat Summerall was appointment television.
On broadcasts, Madden broke out the telestrator, a simple and fun way of showing fans the X’s and O’s of the game. He traveled to games in the “Madden Cruiser” and became a symbol of Thanksgiving, with the Turducken and turkey legs given to the stars of the annual contest. He also created the annual “All-Madden Team”, and while the players likely had no financial bonus for being named to it, being named to it was equal to any other league honor.
Madden’s boisterousness and likability made him a natural to break out in other forms of media. The blue-collar god was the star of countless beer commercials, and when EA Sports needed a face for their football franchise, Madden was the perfect choice.
Madden’s popularity was evident in his then-record-breaking 16 Sports Emmys. Seriously, doesn’t that say it all?
We are proud to nominate John Madden for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
