  • The man with the “golden throat”, Verne Lundquist, was at the heart of some of the most iconic moments in sports history, and it began with a bang, as he had long run as the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys during their “America’s Team” era.

Over a 54-year career, Lundquist called 20 different sports over his career, and used his refined restraint to elevate whatever contest he was calling. As diverse as his portfolio was, Lundqvist was best known for doing the play-by-play for SEC College Football and a 40-year association with the Masters Golf Tournament. He also called games in 33 years of NCAA Tournament basketball and in figure skating at three Olympics.

What made Lundquist so special was his ability to make stars out of his color commentators. Lundqvist elevated his partners by setting them up perfectly and allowing them to shine. If you were doing color commentary, regardless of the sport, you wanted Lundquist with the other microphone.

We are proud to nominate Verne Lundquist for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
