  • Credited with calling 28 different sports, Charlie Jones spent most of his time at NBC, where he is most closely remembered for his football play-by-play calling. Calling games for the network from 1965 to 1997, Jones’s deep, resonant voice was well matched by being upbeat when necessary.

While he was not part of the primary broadcasting team through most of his career, he was the voice of some big games, namely the Buffalo Bills’ 32-point comeback against the Houston Oilers in the 1992 playoffs and the 1987 Fiesta Bowl National Championship.

The expert at painting pictures vocally also worked play-by-play for two different baseball teams over his career (Cincinnati and Colorado), and was front and center at multiple Olympics, most famously calling the 1988 100m dash featuring Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis. He also did a lot of work for NBC at Wimbledon.

We are proud to nominate Charlie Jones for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
