Mike Emrick was a hockey play-by-play man for 47 years (1977-2020), and when it came to who was the first definitive voice for the sport in the United States, it is unquestionably Mike Emrick.
While many hockey players were wizards at moving the puck, Emrick was an artist at explaining how that circular object moved across the ice. With hockey expanding in the United States, it was Emrick who laid the foundation for education.
Regionally, Emrick worked for the Philadelphia Flyers and was the first voice of the New Jersey Devils when they relocated from Colorado. However, as networks broadcast the sport nationally, it was Emrick who was the must-have to lead the broadcast. Over his career, he worked for NBC, Fox, ABC, ESPN, Versus, and OLN, and he called 22 Stanley Cup Finals and multiple Olympic hockey events.
Emrick also broadcast games for the NFL, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and Olympic Water Polo.
We are proud to nominate Mike Emrick for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
