Before he was the voice of the Minnesota Twins, Herb Carneal broadcast for the Philadelphia Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies, but it was under the tutelage of Ernie Harwell that he worked with him in the Baltimore Orioles booth.
Carneal took over as the lead announcer for the Twins in their second year after the move from Washington, and he held that role for 45 years. Carneal’s smooth-as-glass delivery, combined with intricate knowledge and a southern drawl, made him one of the most comforting voices in baseball. He had the pleasure of calling both of Minnesota’s World Series Championships (1987 and 1991), and there is no one in the Gopher State that they would rather hear the call from.
Carneal also broadcast games for the Minnesota Vikings and did AFL games for NBC.
We are proud to nominate Herb Carneal for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
