Holy Cow!!!
The man who made “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” a seventh-inning institution in Chicago, Harry Caray’s career actually began in St. Louis, where he called ball games from 1945 to 1969. After a brief stint in Oakland, Carey spent 10 years with the Chicago White Sox, but it was his move across the city to the Cubs that made him iconic.
With a high-profile team that was on the WGN Superstation, Caray’s coke-bottle glasses, and unabashed homerism turned him from a regional star to a national one. He was only at Wrigley for 17 years, but the tradition of the seventh-inning song remains, and Caray will be forever revered in the Windy City, as also shown by the statue of him that was erected outside of Wrigley Field.
We are proud to nominate Harry Caray for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
