How About That!
Mel Allen was born to call baseball.
From the University of Alabama, where he was the Public Address Announcer, Allen quickly became a radio icon, showing the ability to think on the fly with a smooth delivery.
Allen moved into baseball and quickly became the radio voice for the New York Yankees during their greatest runs, but he was also a radio fixture for the World Series in later years. Later generations remember Allen for narrating the weekly show, “This Week in Baseball.”
Allen was named by the American Sportscasters Association as the second greatest sportscaster in history, and the Yankees honored him forever with a plaque at Monument Park. He was also so revered in Baseball that when the Hall of Fame announced the Ford C. Frick Award, he was the inaugural recipient along with Red Barber.
We are proud to nominate Mel Allen for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
