Before becoming a titan of team ownership, Roger Penske was a top American road racer in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Known for meticulous preparation, he won four consecutive SCCA National Championships from 1960 to 1963. His driving skills earned him Sports Illustrated's SCCA Driver of the Year title in 1961. Penske also competed in two Formula One Grands Prix (1961 and 1962) and secured his only NASCAR victory at the 1963 Riverside 250. He was offered a rookie test for the 1965 Indianapolis 500 but declined to focus on his automotive business, ending his racing career at age 28.
Penske transitioned from the cockpit to the pit box and founded Team Penske in 1966, which has since become the most successful organization in American motorsports history. Known as "The Captain," Penske has led his team to a record 20 Indianapolis 500 wins as of 2024, surpassing any other owner in the race's over 100-year history. His influence extends across various disciplines, with 16 IndyCar championships and multiple NASCAR Cup Series titles, including consecutive wins in 2022 and 2023. His contributions to the sport were recognized in 2019 when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2020, he further built his legacy by acquiring the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series itself.
We are proud to nominate Roger Penske for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
