Canadians and traditional American Hockey cities have not well received the tenure of Gary Bettman, as Bettman has been vocal on expanding to non-traditional hockey markets. Furthermore, the NHL has gone through multiple work stoppages under his watch, including the loss of the 2004-05 Season. Nevertheless, the entirety of his run as NHL Commissioner has been fruitful for the league.
Not only has revenue and salary increased significantly since he took over in 1993, but Bettman has also succeeded in expanding into the American South, adding eight new teams. Hockey in Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee has been successful, and under Bettman, NHL players have returned to the Olympics.
Hockey has never been stronger in the United States, and Gary Bettman is a big reason for that.
We are proud to nominate Gary Bettman for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
