  • Deane Beman was a decent golfer, winning four PGA tournaments, but his accomplishments as the second Commissioner of the PGA put him on the golf map.

Beman held this role from 1974 to 1994, and under his watch, the tour grew in multiple ways. Financially, the Tour’s assets rose from an estimated $400,000 to $260 million, and the golfers saw the purses rise nearly 700 percent in the same timeframe. He used the medium of television to get sponsors to cover production costs, and major events
became must-watch television. He created the Players Championship, the Senior Tour, and a developmental circuit, but also gave back.

Beman had all tournaments support a charitable initiative, which was raising $30 million annually by the time he departed as commissioner. He also introduced pension plans for players, and his mind came up with the World Golf Village, which houses the World Golf Hall of Fame.

We are proud to nominate Deane Beman for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
