We can understand the dislike from many of you regarding Bud Selig. We suspect he understands it too.
Selig initially led a group to keep the Braves in Milwaukee, and when that failed, he purchased the bankrupt Seattle Pilots and relocated them to Milwaukee, where he renamed them the Brewers. Year by year, Selig gained more power within MLB and was instrumental in seeking a vote of no confidence in Commissioner Fay Vincent. When that succeeded, Selig was named the acting Commissioner, and six years later, in 1998, he became MLB’s official Commissioner.
Selig was on hand during the steroids era, but he did oversee the harsh punishments that exist today towards those caught with PEDs. Interleague Play and the Wild Card were introduced during his tenure, as was the World Baseball Classic, which he played a significant role in forming. He also saw revenue increase 400 percent under his watch.
We are proud to nominate Gary Bettman for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
