The son of fellow Football Hall of Fame inductee, Art Rooney, Dan Rooney worked in various capacities for the family business, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rooney was viewed by his employees and peers and transparent and practical, which fostered a management style that bred loyalty. Rooney's teams won six Super Bowls, much of which was due to the environment that he created. Rooney was also vital in labor negotiations that prevented work stoppages that would have damaged the league.

Rooney was also the person who helped to usher a mandate that all NFL teams must interview at least one minority candidate for any vacant head coach or general manager job. In his honor, it was named the "Rooney Rule."
