Pat Gillick began a career in the front office of Major League Baseball teams in 1963, mostly in scouting and personnel. Gillick joined the expansion Toronto Blue Jays, where he became their general manager.
It was a slow build in Toronto, but it will all be worth it as the team he built won the World Series in 1992 and 1993, marking the first time that the World Series left the United States. Gillick resigned shortly after and took over the general manager’s role for the Baltimore Orioles. Gillick was only there for three seasons, but Baltimore made the playoffs twice under his tenure.
Gillick then joined the Seattle Mariners in 2000, where they went to the playoffs back-to-back that year and 2001 when they had a 116-46 record. After leaving Seattle in 2003, he resurfaced in Philadelphia for another three-year stint, building up a team that won the 2008 World Series. Gillick retired as a general manager after that for good after, but he would remain an advisor with the Phillies many years later.
We are proud to nominate Pat Gillick for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
