Eddie DeBartolo Jr. purchased the San Francisco 49ers in 1977, and in the 23 years he owned the franchise, the 49ers went from also-rans to perennial NFL power. Through smart hiring, DeBartolo transformed the culture of the 49ers, and his teams won 13 division titles and won five Super Bowls.
Legal troubles led to him being fined by the NFL and banned for a year of active control. DeBartolo decided not to return and gave the power of the team to his sister.
Regardless of the scandals, he was embroiled in, DeBartolo Jr's impact in the NFL is sound, and he is a worthy candidate for this Hall of Fame.
We are proud to nominate Eddie DeBartolo Jr. for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
