Known as the “Father of Professional Baseball," he was the sport's first legendary manager, most famous for organizing and leading the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first fully professional team. Under his strict discipline and innovative leadership, the club famously went undefeated in 1869, finishing with a perfect 57-0 record. Wright was a visionary who introduced foundational strategic concepts still used today, such as defensive shifts based on hitters’ tendencies, outfielders backing up infield plays, and the regular use of batting practice.
Following his success in Cincinnati, Wright managed for 23 seasons in the National Association and National League, primarily with the Boston Red Stockings and Philadelphia Phillies. He led his teams to six league championships, including a dominant stretch of four consecutive pennants from 1872 to 1875 in Boston. Wright was the first manager to reach 1,000 career wins, finishing his tenure with 1,225 wins and a stellar .581 winning percentage. His contributions to the game's professional evolution and structure led to his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
We are proud to nominate Harry Wright for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
