Alfred "Greasy" Neale was a legendary multi-sport figure who most notably boosted the Philadelphia Eagles from perennial underdogs to back-to-back NFL champions. When he took over in 1941, Neale introduced the innovative "Eagle Defense," a 5-2-4 alignment that transformed defensive strategies against the then-popular T-formation. His tactical ingenuity and emphasis on disciplined, physical play guided the Eagles to three straight NFL Championship games, winning the 1948 and 1949 titles with shutout victories.

Beyond his defensive innovations, Neale was a master at maximizing talent, famously guiding Hall of Fame running back Steve Van Buren to four rushing titles during his tenure. Before his professional success, Neale also proved his coaching mettle in the college ranks, most notably leading Washington & Jefferson College to a scoreless tie against the heavily favored California Golden Bears in the 1922 Rose Bowl. For his role as a pioneering strategist and his foundational impact on the Eagles franchise, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969.
