Jim Leyland first gained prominence in the Majors as the Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team he brought to three straight National League Championship Series (1990-92) and won two Manager of the Year Awards. He guided Pittsburgh for 11 seasons, but after the departure of his superstar, Barry Bonds, and the changing of baseball’s financial landscape, which led to the Pirates having smaller payrolls. Leyland left and joined the Florida Marlins, where in his first year there (1997), he won the World Series.
The Marlins went into an immediate fire sale, and Leyland was bought out of his contract the following year. Leyland then took over for a season in Colorado and looked to be out of managing until the Detroit Tigers came calling in 2006, and Leyland returned home to the organization where he spent his first 18 years as a minor league player and coach.
Leyland turned it around immediately and brought Detroit to the World Series in 2006. He later led the Tigers to three consecutive playoff appearances (2011-13), which included a second World Series appearance. Leyland retired after the 2013 Season, but came back to guide the United States to a World Baseball Classic win in 2017, making Leyland the only Manager to win a World Series and a WBC.
We are proud to nominate Jim Leyland for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
