Catchers always make the best Managers, don’t they?
Bruce Bochy was a low-level Catcher for the San Diego Padres and later became a coach in their system. He worked his way up to become their Manager in 1996 and led them back to the World Series in 1998, where they lost to the New York Yankees. The Padres predominantly operated as a small-market team when he was there, but he had the chance to see what he could do with a higher payroll when he took over as Manager of
the San Francisco Giants.
In San Francisco, Bochy led a mini-dynasty that won three World Series Championships (2010, 2012, and 2014) and cemented his place as one
of the best in the game. He retired as a Manager after the 2019 season, but the managing bug returned. In 2023, he took over as the Texas Rangers Manager and immediately took them to their first World Series win in franchise history.
As of this writing, Bochy is still Texas’s Manager.
We are proud to nominate Bruce Bochy for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
