  • One of the most colorful personalities in all of sports, John Madden first joined the Raiders as a linebackers coach in 1967, a year that also saw Oakland win the AFL Championship. Madden made an impression on Raiders’ owner, Al Davis, who promoted him to head coach.

Davis was the Raiders engineer, but Madden was its conductor. Oakland became favorites outside of their fanbase. A constant thread to go to the Super Bowl, Madden took Oakland to the AFL/AFC Championship Game seven times. Madden’s team only broke through to the Super Bowl once, but they won it, beating Minnesota in Super Bowl XI.

Following his coaching career, Madden became a successful color analyst and later led his name to an NFL video game.

We are proud to nominate John Madden for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
