A quarterback at Baylor, Hayden Fry would later coach defensive backs for the Bears, but it was for another team in Texas, SMU, where he landed his first chance to be a head coach.
Fry led the Mustangs to an SWC Title in 1966, and he stayed in the state when he moved to North Texas State, winning the MVC in 1973. These were noble accomplishments, but when he became the head coach at Iowa in 1979, Fry put forth a career that gained him entry to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Fry coached the Hawkeyes to three Big Ten titles, and six bowl wins. In his conference title years, Fry was unable to capture the Rose Bowl, but the Hawkeyes finished ranked ten times under Fry.
We are proud to nominate Hayden Fry for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
