  • A halfback at Minnesota, Bernie Bierman traveled west in 1919 to become Montana's head football and basketball coach. He would do the same for Mississippi State and Tulane before returning to his alma mater in 1932 as strictly their football coach.

Bierman helmed the Golden Gophers to seven Big Ten titles and five National Championships. Minnesota had been recognized as a version of the National Champion before, but under Bierman, they held that recognition five times in an eight-year period, which is the most successful era in the program's history.

World War II altered Minnesota’s momentum, as Bierman left to serve his country for four years. He returned to coach Minnesota for six years before retiring.

We are proud to nominate Bernie Bierman for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
