When you discuss pioneering women in sports, Ann Meyers is at the top of the list.
She broke barriers as the first high school player to make the U.S. national team and shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first woman to earn a full four-year athletic scholarship at UCLA. Throughout her collegiate career, she propelled the Bruins to an AIAW national championship in 1978 and etched her name into history as the first four-time All-American in women's college basketball. Her unparalleled dominance peaked when she recorded the first-ever quadruple-double in NCAA Division I history, underscoring her legendary status.
On the international stage, she won a silver medal with the first U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team in 1976 and later earned a gold medal at the 1979 World Championships.
Meyers continued to shatter barriers after her UCLA playing career, notably becoming the first and only woman to sign a contract with an NBA team, the Indiana Pacers, in 1979. Although she did not make the final roster, she embarked on a pioneering broadcasting career that has lasted over 40 years, covering numerous Olympics and professional games. She would also be a successful executive for the Phoenix Mercury, where she won three WNBA Titles.
We are proud to nominate Ann Meyers for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
