  • Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Monica Seles was the darling of women’s tennis in the early 1990s. She won her first title in 1989 by defeating the legendary Chris Evert. Seles rapidly became the French Open Champion at the age of 16 and, from 1990 to 1993, won eight Grand Slams.

Entering 1993 as a three-time WTA Champion, Seles was tragically stabbed from behind during a tournament by a deranged Steffi Graf fan. It derailed her career, but she was able to return, though her dominant phase was arguably over. Regardless, her two-handed attack and cerebral game were influential throughout the court for years to come.

Seles became an American citizen in 1994 and competed for the United States often, winning three Fed Cups, two Hopman Cups, and an Olympic Bronze Medal in 2000.

We are proud to nominate Monica Seles for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
