Sheryl Swoopes, a game-changer in Texas Tech women’s basketball history, was a two-time All-American who won the prestigious Naismith College Player of the Year. Her leadership led her school to an NCAA Championship in 1993, and she was undoubtedly the top player in women’s college hoops.
With the formation of the WNBA, Swoopes was designated to the Houston Comets, who, along with Cynthia Cooper, formed the first WNBA dynasty. The Comets won the league’s first four WNBA Championships, and the Guard later won three league MVPs and two Defensive Player of the Year Awards. They have also been named to every WNBA Anniversary Team.
While representing the United States, Swoopes played a prominent role in three Olympic Gold Medals and two World Championship Golds.
We are proud to nominate Sheryl Swoopes for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
