  • John Elway knew his worth.

After a stellar career at Stanford, Elway was the consensus top pick going into the 1983 Draft. He made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with the Baltimore Colts, the team that held that was set to draft first. Drama ensued, and Elway remained steadfast, stating that he would rather play baseball than join what was then the worst team in football. Elway got his way, was traded to Denver after he was drafted, and the rest was history.

Elway was must-watch television, using his accuracy and running ability to make Denver contenders. He brought the Broncos to six AFC Championship Games, winning five, and while his first three Super Bowls did not go his way, the nine-time Pro Bowl Selection won it all two years in a row in his final two years in Football. The Denver fanbase waited a long time for their titles, and they bet on Elway, who, years before, bet on himself.

We are proud to nominate John Elway for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
