  • There are women’s soccer players from the United States who have had more stellar careers, but no player has had a more iconic goal (and celebration) in American soccer history.
An All-American at the University of California in 1986, Brandi Chastain was forced to rehab a torn ACL and missed the next two years. She transferred to Santa Clara University, bringing them to two straight NCAA College Cup Final Fours.
While representing the U.S., Chastain helped lead the Americans to two Olympic Golds, and two World Cups, punctuated by scoring the winning penalty kick to defeat China and win the tournament. She celebrated by removing her jersey and revealing her sports bra, which for the time was controversial or empowering, depending on your point of view.
We are proud to nominate Brandi Chastain for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
