  • The triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon. The sport, which emerged in the late-70s, is the most grueling one-day event for any athlete. As the sport grew, it was inevitable that someone was going to become the first great triathlete. That man was Dave Scott.

Scott won his first Ironman World Championship in 1980 and would win it again five more times in the decade, with three more second-place finishes. He would have a rivalry with fellow American, Mark Allen, and the two would grow the sport, pushing the boundaries of what a human body could do in one day.

Scott’s six wins remain a World Championship record, which was tied by Allen.

We are proud to nominate Dave Scott for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
