Michael Johnson won a lot, but even if he didn't, you couldn't take your eyes off of him. Johnson ran in a stiff upright style, completely unlike his competition, but as much as coaches might have shaken their heads, they were doing that with Johnson on the top of the podium.
Johnson won the 200 m at the 1991 World Championships but failed in that event at the 1992 Olympics as he had food poisoning leading up to the event, which weakened the favorite. Despite this, Johnson remained a stat in sprinting, winning the 400 m, at both the 1993 and 1995 Worlds, and at the 1996 Atlanta Games, he became the first athlete to win Gold in both the 200 m and 400 m.
The 400 m remained Johnson’s signature event, as he won two more Worlds (1997 & 1999) and would retain his Gold at the 2000 Sydney Games.
We are proud to nominate Michael Johnson for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
